At 7% annual return, compounding does 68% of the work. Every year you wait costs you the most expensive dollars in the stack.
How this works
The calculator uses a future value of annuity formula, assuming you contribute the same amount at the end of each year and earn a consistent annual return. Real markets don't move in straight lines — but the long-run average of a broad index fund has historically landed around 7–10% nominal.
The 2025 Roth IRA contribution limit is $7,000/year ($8,000 if you're 50+). Income limits apply — phase-out begins at $150k (single) / $236k (married filing jointly) for 2025.
The biggest lever here isn't the return rate — it's years. Starting at 25 vs. 35 is often worth more than picking the "right" funds.
